Rage at the hub

So, I sent in my transcript request stuff about a month ago. My check was cashed about 3 weeks ago. I have recieved no word of any sort from anyone associated with the hub since then. I called them up this morning to find out what the deal was, and they quite happily told me that I have an outstanding balance of about $1700. Say what? Well, apparently, I’ve been collecting $18 in monthly fees on a balance from June of ’02 which they also failed to inform me of. And where did that balance come from? Gee, can’t tell me? (lay you 10 to 1 that it’s from a complete failure on their part to handle my staff tuition benefit paperwork, because they’ve never fucked that up before, nope, not like half the times I used it, certainly not). Who do I talk to about this? Oh, sorry, she’s not in. Why don’t you send her an email?

Hello,

My name is Stephen Ulrich. I’m an alum from cmu. I recently mailed in a request for my transcripts for several grad school applications. My check was cashed three weeks ago. When I called this morning to find out why I still have not recieved the transcripts, I was told that a block had been placed on them, of which I had not been informed. This is apparently over a balance from june of ’02 and subsequent late fees, of which I likewise had not been informed. My suspicion is that my staff tuition benefits paperwork was not properly processed and applied for one or more of the courses I took that summer. I was told you were the person I should talk to about this.

While I realize you personally are not to blame, I am incredibly angry over this. Not least of the causes being that I recieved no notification that any of this was going on, but it doesn’t help that the hub cashed my check without any apparent intention doing what I paid for.

What is going to be done about this?

    1. I point to the 15 minute span it took for me to get a cc’ed email to hr in which she seeks to confirm my staff status at the time. I didn’t go ballistic on her, I stated my situation clearly, and said I was angry and why. I didn’t share exactly what I was thinking of cmu beauracracy at the time.

What would you have done differently?

      1. There’s really no point to saying you’re angry. It just puts them on the defensive and more likely to not want to help you.

Firm but very nice is better.

  1. I know no one down at the Hub, but I do know people in Enrollment who might know people down there. If your letter doesn’t do anything I could attempt to make some inquiries. Email me if need be.

  2. another suggestion

If they refused to budge, talk to an attorney. There are regulations and laws on the assessement of fees and “piling on” of fines – especially on dormant accounts or in your case – someone who had no notice or letters discussing the accounts. I’m not sure where CMU is…
