survey & creativity

here‘s the list
and here’s my subset

1. Scary Stories (Series) by Alvin Schwartz
8. Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson [never actually read it, but it was read to us in an elementary school reading class.]
10. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger [didn’t get it, didn’t like it, might as well not have read it]
23. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
24. The New Joy of Gay Sex by Charles Silverstein
43. Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes [I almost think I’ve read it, but I know I haven’t]
51. A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein [Banned?! For heaven’s sake, why?]
55. Sleeping Beauty Trilogy by A.N. Roquelaure (Anne Rice) [only browsed it]
59. The Anarchist Cookbook by William Powell [only browsed it]
68. Lord of the Flies by William Golding [truly fucked up.]

I am … Mercurial
I think … constantly
I know … a little bit about a lot of things
I want … to understand
I have … not alot, but more than I need
I wish … for a better tomorrow
I hate … it when some one is absolutely confident, and totally wrong
I miss … what I’m aiming at if I don’t really care
I fear … loneliness and discord
I hear … the patter of my fingers on the keyboard, particularly the backspace key
I wonder … what we might have missed
I regret … the harm that I’ve caused and the things I have not tried out of fear
I love … to play, with words, ideas, bodies, board games, and others
I ache … At the memory of my mistakes
I care … about everyone
I always … decry the use of absolutes
I am not … as erratic as I might seem
I dance … when the mood strikes me, and I am comfortable with the people watching
I sing … when there are 20 guys around me singing (or at least trying to sing) the same note.
I cried … in front of three people over the past decade.
I do not always … see as far ahead as I would like
I fight … only after all other options are exhausted, and I see it having a positive impact.
I write … sporadically
I win … from time to time
I lose … graciously
I confuse … people who don’t understand
I listen … to what everyone has to say, then I do what I think is best
I can usually be found … in a pose of reflection
I need … people, and solitude, peace and stimulation, all in their time, and all in their measure
I am happy about … the state of my life at this moment. Not exactly where I want to be for all time, but good enough for now.
I should … get my ass to gmhc training, pronto

  1. Hmmm…

29 on the 1990-9 banned book list, only 26 on the more recent one.
THe funny thing is that a two of these books I just re-found after reading them when I was younger, and I’ve -wanted- to reread them (bridge to taribethia, Fade), but didn’t remember titles or authors.

I also have about 5 books on each list which are on my ‘I need to read these’ list- stuff like American Psycho.

We actually had a banned book reading in Houston at one point, and discussed why stuff like In the Night Kitchen was banned (animated semi-nudity, staying up late was about all we could come up with).

To be banned, a book has tobe able to affect people first. Otherwise there’s no point in banning it.

  2. It’s interesting how many of those books on the subset of the banned book list you read are things I’ve been read alound in school, or seen in K12 lit-books. Are people simply pickier about censoring children’s books?

Its bizzare, I see “banned books” and I expect something actually subversive. Instead I see a list of books that people don’t want their children to read. I’m not sure what it means.
