I played my second game of advanced agricola 2 player, same as last time. Last time it was pretty close, this time it wasn’t close at all.
My first turn I played an occupation which let me plow a field every time I picked up a grain. If this seems incredibly overpowered that’s because it is. There were a couple other bonuses that I got, but that was the one that made the biggest difference, imho.
My opponent claimed that I took opportunities from him, but he picked first for the vast majority of the game. I think it had more to do with this being his second play, his first 2 player and his first on the advanced version. (His other play was the basic/family version 5 player. He won handily, I lost badly) I’ve played the basic version 3or 4 times, and the advanced version twice now. =)
He also ended up doing better than either he or I expected. Final score was about 34 to 45. His came much more from improvements than mine.
Also played hanging gardens for the first time. Did crappy the first time (tried to build compactly, which is not how the game is suppposed to go, curse my urban planner training. =) won the second game via tie breaker with the guy who came in last for the one before.
Also neat seeing clj user=blk> there, even if we didn’t gtet the chance to hang out much.
I’ll be in Columbus for Origins next week. I don’t remember if you were going.
My boss pointed out that Columbus Pride is going on next weekend as well. I may take a break and check it out.
I’ll be there. Do you have my contact info? Check my profile page if not.
I’m kind of over the Agricola anticipation. I chose not to buy it at Essen last year because of the excessive amount of language that would need to be translated, then got very excited about the English version for a while. But with all of the delays and then eventually these cards they’re releasing for rules I don’t understand, I’m over the excitement. It’ll show up when it shows up.
But I do understand that everyone seems to love it so I’ll be glad to try it when I get the package from Z-Man. 🙂
I like it quite a bit. I tend to have gaming obsessions (past examples include Puerto Rico, Scepter of Zavandor, Race for the Galaxy and Through the Ages). I haven’t got quite to that “eager puppy humping one’s leg” level of annoying mono-focused fixation with Agricola, but I did play it two weeks in a row for wednesday night gaming (in which one long and one short game is about as much as one can reasonably fit. =)
I only got to play Agricola once, but that was in German, so while it was fun, it was a bit too much of a trial. I am looking forward to seeing an English-language version; I didn’t realize it was out yet.
It’s not out in english yet. Scott, our Wednesday night gaming host, hand pasted english translations over every card and spot on the board. And there have got to be a few hundred cards. I’m impressed by his dedication, and appreciative of the results, though I can’t imagine bothering myself. =)
