I’ve had thoughts about dropping WoW for a bit and seeing how this affects my time allocation. Like more sleep, more exercise, more cooking (instead of eating out) all seem likely. Maybe I should…
A full night’s sleep? I vaguely remember that. Funny how I stopped experiencing that about the same time I bought WoW.
Ha. I think the real trick is to keep the laptop out of my bedroom. That would help immensely.
Do it. I let my account lapse about a month ago. Anybody miss me?
Yes but…
I figured, like the others, that you’d just lost interest.
Lambda seems to be winding down. All good things must come to an end.
Actually, I did. But far be it from me to urge people into my self-destructive habits… =)
Exactly what time allocation are you currently spending in WoW?
I lapsed into playing too much about a month ago, and now I’m trying “only play for Lambda events”. Seems to work. I realized I just wasn’t having fun if I wasn’t playing with folks I knew IRL.
I let my account lapse and started playing FFXI again. Fortunately, I play FFXI a lot less often, so the amount of time I have away from MMO’s has greatly increased, and I think that’s a good thing.
An interesting de-escalation that. I found FFXI more addictive, but less rewarding. =) Though I do think it has a much more interesting/sophisticated player economy.
Well, you know my feelings 🙂 Lesley and I definitely miss the Lambda fun, but weighed against more sleep, more cooking, more time with puppy, and more exposure to other fine consumer entertainment products, the choice was pretty clear.
It helps if you tell yourself “I’ll just take a break until the next expansion comes out!”
I think the problem is that there is no substitution for you, my Lambda friends (awww), so I accept the inferior alternative of WoW time because it’s cheaper/less time consuming than transcontinental flights.
Move to California!
[ducks]
If you are playing this week, you are passing up FUCKING GORGEOUS WEATHER.
I’m not getting any sleep with all the sun, though.
Ewww, sun. =)
If you cancel auto-renewal, when would your subscription lapse?
I recommend cold turkey, it’s too addictive to just play a little bit.
There’s always THIS wonderful alternative! 🙂

My personal experience is that lambda wasn’t letting me go play the content I hoped to see, and so I went off to join a raiding guild.
I raided, and I saw serpent shrine, and tempest keep, and most especially Zul Aman. Black Temple and Mount Hyjal are really neat. And there is challenge to be had. And something really works regarding the play of a whole bunch of people (25 specifically) coming together periodically to improve their game and enjoy the company of each other.
It’s kind of like a bridge club only you’re all on one team.
The problem is the issues of organization are pretty overwhelming. Keeping the army assembled, timely, happy, coordinated, and challenged, and fed is a huge amount of extra work on top of the actual activity. Software to be acquired, patterns to be mastered and disseminated, reagents to farm, and mats to process… The amount of preperation and overhead easily extends well beyond twice the investment of the core game. I’m possibly about ready to be done as well.
The most fun I had was levelling with one or two friends who I really enjoyed, wandering around and blasting shit. I wonder if there’s a 20%-of-the-time skeleton that could be stripped from the behemoth that is wow.
Player economies are alot of fun for many people, consider eve online. WoW’s is relatively primitive compared to FFXI’s, but yeah, I get your point. I may even return in the winter when going out sucks so much. But the way I’m currently using it, like some people use TV, just isn’t cool.
The economy thing seemed neat, but the more I learned about it the more I realized it was fairly dumb, and by that I mean the wow economy specifically.
There’s basically money fountains that cause mass inflation, and then money sucks that try to curb it. Worrying about profitable activity is something of a waste of time, because the more gold you have, the more your weath is deflating, and because people’s perception of value takes time to adjust, hooking into the newest money fountain often wins over “profitable” activity. Therefore providing (most) services to the player base at large isn’t worth your time, unless its satisfaction on its own. Playing the market requires advance knowledge (insider trading) or huge volumes/risk to make notable profit over the fountain-based income.
Essentially, I “won the game” in terms of the wow economy. My characters acquired over 10k gold, and earning more is a waste of time. In fact I stopped trying to earn gold around 5k but it happened anyway. Of course my current 10k is worth something around 6k in adjusted buying power, but whatever. When I need things crafted I can just buy all the component materiels, which saves a little grinding and is nice. But ultimately the thing that keeps people playing is the raiding progression, the pvp, or their friends. Mostly the friends.
