Two galling recent events

Firing the general for adultery pisses me the fuck off. Firing for sexual harrassment, rape, whatever, I could see. Firing for adultery seems like a total waste of talent. If he wants to fuck up his personal life six ways from sunday, as a member of the people he’s protecting, I’m fine with that, so long as he manages to do his job well. Absurd policy, abyssmal waste.

Cindy Sheehan. It’s great that someone is bringing it home for him. It sucks that this is what it takes to bring it to the American public’s attention. It’s like a michael moore documentary and it annoys me. One soldier, one mother. If it had been a perfectly reasonable action taken to stop a genocide, the same stunt could be pulled. Would it resonate as much? Probably not. But, ugh.

  1. Heh, the general was due to retire soon; relieving him of command early was little more than a political maneuver, at worst, to score points with veterans and active duty who criticize the lack of uniform application of the UCMJ to the higher ranks. There really was no ‘waste’ he’s still going to get his pension etc. On this matter, as a veteran, I’m torn between my senses of justice and duty.

As for Sheehan, I think the media is just bored.

  2. Doubtful

People are RARELY relieved of duty under the adultery charge. Usually this only is applied if either it is like a “plea” in that by accepting this one avoids a more shameful prosecution, or it is politically convenient to enforce on someone.

(I believe) in the entire history of the U.S. Army, NO four-star general has been relieved of duty for Adultery. Zero.

Likely there is more to this story than one suspects. I also doubt this was done to make an example for the lower ranks. Who knows?

  3. hello

Stephen with a “ph”: nice meeting you Sat. at Charlie’s. I’m fearing that this email will be public but I don’t know how to email you privately. Best of luck with school. Perhaps our lives will intersect again in the future. Lee
