Crunches and push ups can be done anywhere… Although they might not get you the “killer abs” that you want.. they can help get you the “fairly good at beating people up” abs that one needs to have first…
Personally.. I do about 250 crunches a day.. and 250 leg lifts.. as well as 250 push-ups.. (5 sets of 50 of these).. I do them because I set myself a goal of physically understanding what a “million” was a while ago.. and I figured doing 1,000,000 push ups would actually be somewhat of an accomplishment..
As of this past may.. I finished the first 500,000, which took me nearly 7.5 years…
so although you may not find a gym while you are travelling.. you can still work out..
crunches and other ab exercises can certainly be done anywhere with incredible results. though I do like hanging leg raises, which are harder to do without *some* amount of equipment.
Some Gold’s Gyms are 15. 🙂
Note…

Re: Note…
I agree with Roman here. Abs are one of the many muscle groups you can do great things for without any equipment.
shit…if you knew someone at one of those places it would probably be free or $5.
do you have a membership in chicago with someone? Most major chains have partners in other cities if they don’t have their own centers there.
also, you could spend the same amount probably and hit a gay bathhouse that has some gym equipment. get more for your money.
Well, the one bathhouse I’ve been inside did not have what one might call ‘high quality’ gym equipment. =)
what you do is you say you’re evaluating the gym…
Alas, they’ve already got that angle covered: you have to show proof of local residence for that plan.
I just told them I was thinking about moving to the area…listened through their spiel and got a week pass.
I do travel a bit. 🙂
