A recently burned dvd was inserted into my iBook’s superdrive. It makes weird noises, like it starts to spin up a few times, and does not acknowledge the existence in any other way. Eject button, holding down the trackpad button on reboot, and open firmware eject command did nothing. Will I have to go to a flipping mac store to solve this one?
Nope, reboot and hold down the trackpad button during boot to cause the drive mechanism to eject. Should work if it isn’t stuck.

Sadly, it seems to be stuck.
Yuck, yeah sounds like apple store time.
Yikes, sounds ugly.
My only thought it to try the System Profiler to see if the drive itself is even being recognized by the system at all (presumably in the ATA section under Hardware.) Optimistically, perhaps it’s something simple like the drive connector became unattached, which would be simple to fix, once the case is open, of course…
Good luck.
Well at least this little ordeal has taught me about the system profiler, but the cdrom shows up quite clearly there.
(Happened to see this via a friend’s friendlist…)
Does your model of iBook have a little hole on the side of the drive? If so, pushing a straightened paper clip into that hole should make it eject the disc. Another thing to try is zapping the NVRAM: reboot, wait for the startup chime, then hold down Command-Option-P-R until it reboots again.
Otherwise, I’d try the Apple Store.
Alas, no little hole.
Thanks for the suggestion on the NVRAM. Even if it doesn’t pan out, I’m glad you posted. Your journal is a hoot. =)
Why thank you. I like your journal too. I also see that we’ve both met. I last saw him about a year ago, when he came to visit his friend (and mine) . Small world.
they have eject buttons on the disc drives now? That was one thing that always bugged me on macs, how you had to request for your disc to be ejected.
I only wish.
