Program Description:
This is a two-year position, with a base salary of $42,500. The percent time of this position is preferably 100% although it may be negotiable from 75% to 100%. Continuation beyond two years is contingent on employee?s job performance and funding availability. This position reports to the Initiative?s co-leaders, Anne Kapuscinski, Peter Reich and David Tilman. The goal of the Ecosystem Science and Sustainability Initiative is to establish a University-wide program that brings together the presently dispersed talents and knowledge of faculty and students from the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities around the challenge of finding realistic options to sustain both ecosystems and society. A team approach will integrate people and activities across three primary goals involving education, research, and outreach. The teaching goal is to launch a new undergraduate program in Sustainability Studies, starting with a Sustainability Studies Minor, by forming and supporting an interdisciplinary team of faculty to design new courses that stress interconnections between society and the environment, and give students an integrated view of sustainability problems and of realistic options to address them. The research goal is to expand existing well-funded environmental research projects into a multidisciplinary team that simultaneously pursues science and its economic, policy, social and esthetic implications. The outreach goal is to develop and launch a summer training course for K-12 teachers and journalists that will provide scientific knowledge about the environment and hands-on learning about research on ecosystems and sustainability while exploring the costs, benefits and tradeoffs of alternative practices and policies, and the choices that society faces.
Duties:
The Coordinator will have major responsibilities for the day-to-day operation of the Ecosystem Science and Sustainability Initiative and will work closely with the three co- leaders in developing and implementing all aspects of the program. The responsibilities of the Coordinator will include: 1) Providing leadership and administrative guidance of all program activities, including developing, scheduling and managing activities associated with the planning, implementation and operation of the program 2) Coordinating communications among individuals and working groups within the program. 3) Managing the budget in consultation with the co-leaders. 4) Providing leadership and administrative assistance for curriculum development, course implementation, summer program development and implementation, and research projects. 5) Playing an intellectual role in the development and implementation of program activities. 6) Acting as a spokesperson for the project (in addition to the three program leaders). 7) Assisting in the development of grant proposals needed to support and assure the sustainability of the program itself.
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications: Master?s in relevant field required and Ph.D. preferred. Desired qualifications: Strong academic training and/or external experience in environmental science and/or policy. Excellent writing and oral communication skills. Strong organizational and management skills. Interest and/or experience in teaching environmental science/policy. Ability to interact with faculty and students and coordinate teaching and research programs involving faculty from departments and colleges around the university
