from www.electoral-vote.com:
Are the voters stupid? It is not considered politically correct to point out that an awful lot of voters don’t have a clue what they are talking about. A recent poll from Middle Tennessee State University sheds some light on the subject. For example, when asked which candidate wants to roll back the tax cuts for people making over $200,000 a year, a quarter thought it was Bush and a quarter didn’t know. And it goes down hill from there. When asked which candidate supports specific positions on various issues, the results were no better than chance. While this poll was in Tennessee, I strongly suspect a similar poll in other states would get similar results. I find it dismaying that many people will vote for Bush because they want to tax the rich (which he opposes) or vote for Kerry because they want school vouchers for religious schools (which he opposes).
Um, hi. Hope you don’t mind me snooping in here- i was just clicking around, and got caught on the words ‘voters stupid’
I guess that it’s not as bad when voting isn’t compulsory…? I wouldn’t know, i’m Australian. But i overheard a person sitting next to me saying how she voted for ‘John Howard, i think. I don’t know, i just thought it was easiest…’
I mean, i’m not expecting for a minute that you would have any idea of who John Howard is, but he’s the little weasel who is in love with George Bush, and will go along with anything he asks. Which makes me particularly worried, as i’m a pacifist, and i don’t want to vote for an Australian prime minister, and get an American president with a family history of warmongering.
I’m saying my opinions very freely here- i’m sorry if any offense is taken, but i’ll gladly listen to anyone who challenges them 🙂
Surely those who vote would actually want to vote in the US? I think i must’ve gotten the wrong idea here- but i’m ignorant on this one, i’ve never thought of the pros and cons of the voting system over there!
Anyway, sorry about that. Like i said, i was just a little caught up in your first sentence.
At this point, I would just be happy if some voting OFFICIALS/workers had some clue, and that we’d nail to the wall all people/organizations who are registering voters, then throwing away the registrations of people in competing parties.
Having said that, I’d like to thank Mrs. Groff (a voting official in Lancaster, PA) for taking the time to answer some voting questions I had. She, and some of the workers at my local polling place, have been patient, dilligent, helpful and friendly.
