FFXI update

Mesharr has taken the ferry from Mhaura to Selbina. She and Loren met face to face for the first time ever last night. She also went to San D’oria, and picked up the Mea and Hol telepoint crystals, as well as basic guild memberships in woodworking, smithing, and leatherwork. Not sure if this is actually necessary to advance the relevant skills, but I read somewhere online that it was, so it must be true 😉 She finished her level up to 15 solo, and she was on her way to Bastok, when she ran across a low level Quadav right outside the border to Gustaberg(?). Figuring she could take it easy, I had her start pounding on it. I noticed the goblins that joined in the party just before she killed the quadav, half a second before she was killed herself and leveled back down. So, now she’s awaiting my special attention in Selbina again. Maybe I’ll just have her beeline for Bastok and the final guild memberships before resuming her quest for levels. =)

I’m kinda enjoying it. Largely for the feel of the imaginary environment. CoH seems simpler from an intellectual perspective (no real economy), but it does seem pretty cool from the setting perspective, and the powers are neat too. (Jim showed it to me yesterday, but that’s another story.)

  1. You need guild membership to take the tests (you’re capped at 10 skill before passing the first test, and can take the test at 8 skill. Repeat every 10 points). You may also need guild membership to get synthesis support, but that’s pretty minor, since membership signup is right next to synthesis support.

    1. claims that guild membership is necessary to advance in skill at all. I plan to test this with alchemy or goldsmithing before I actually get the membership. If I can, then there is absolutely no point to visiting bastok before I hit 8 in one of those skills, or need to for quest/mission related purposes. =)

      1. Heh, that’s definitely not true. I got 8 fishing before I went to Windurst. Still, it’s not like it’s hard to go get the guild memberships. You just need to hit the starter towns, and there’s nothing dangerous on the way between them.

          1. There’s a low level quest that lets you ride a chocobo all the way there. It takes talent to get yourself killed while on one.

        1. Truly?
Hm, maybe I didn’t subject myself to enough agonizing repetition with fishing before I sucked it up and joined the guild.
Though now that you mention it, I think I might have gained some bonecarving skill from the Xiphos swords I made early on (there’s a Giant Femur component).

        1. suggestions

Well, so, at level 18, you are first able to dual-job. You can’t get any special jobs (like ranger) until 30. Between 20 and 30, you’ll definitely want to be dual-job.

So, depending on what you want to do with it all, thief/fighter or thief/monk => ranger/thief would be a good route to go. I intend to get to at least level 15 in all the basic jobs (thief, monk, fighter, red, black, and white mage), well, maybe not red mage.

In terms of min-maxing, Mithra is probably the race that best complements your class interests (dex/agl oriented). Hume is more balanced, good for trying a little bit of everything. In terms of ‘pretty’ characters, hume pretty much wins, to my mind. Race is the only immutable element of a character.

          Don’t worry, we’ll treat you right. =)
