I really and truly want a 19″ flat panel lcd thingie. I mean, flat panel lcd’s, way more portable, easier on the eyes, and when you factor in the power savings, they’re cheaper in the long run…. Really…
But $500 is a bit much, so it’ll probably be a 17″ one, for more like $360. And then my Kung Fu Sex Kitten Mithra Monk will start plowing through the bees and mushroom people of saruta-baruta.
I’ve been meaning to make the switch as well. Not only are the 17″ lcds cheaper, I’ve been hearing pretty bad things about 19″ and gaming. Too much ghosting or something.
Have fun in your stuttering midget hovel. Your choice of world should take into account how much I like you. Treat me well and I may synthesize you a lovely pair of brass knuckles. Treat me poorly and I will go out of my way to lead epic goblin trains that will haunt you and your loved ones forever.
Where do you get your numbers, foo? 🙂
Power savings range from 30%-60%. Do the math, and it would take you around a decade to pay it off… assuming you have it on 24 hours a day. The period is way longer if you consider that you are ACTUALLY concerned about power usage and TURN IT OFF (or use power saving mode).
Sounds like needless consumption to me. 😉
My math came up with around a 2/3 savings, based off the estimates from
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=1082 and a general savings of $25/year. This was based off of 5 hours of use per day (probably an underestimate, but I do go on vacation sometimes. =) and 15 hours of energy saver mode (because I sometimes remember to turn it off, but usually don’t).
Google said about 150W when on, and 30W on idle for a CRT, vs 30-60 W (I chose 50W) when on, and 2-4W (I chose 3W) when idle for LCD.
And 7 cents / kWHour.
I do need to get a screen of some sort, though, and given differences in power consumption I might pay the extra for something that’ll make me happier overall, and be a little less energy consumptive. Though I do wonder about the production processes, as I suspect that would also make a tremendous difference. Total environmental cost & all that.
also note the ‘really…’ this was intended to convey a certain level of attempting to convince myself of the truth of my statements. =)
