And yeah, black mage really is a waste of a good spot in your party. Red mage is several times more combat effective, and he can heal. All you need from him is haste, and red mage can handle that quite nicely. =)

FF1 or some newfangled FF?
I always liked Fighter, White Mage, and two Black Mages in FF1.
I blame the irrelevant Intelligence stat. Sure the Black Mage gets more than anyone, but what good does it do when all the spell effects are bound to a fixed damage range? Nevertheless, my lethal energy projection fetish gets the better of me and I indulge these types of characters no matter how useless they end up being.
