No Amero-Centrism Here

Re: Washington, DC

Mainly, though, I loved being a dollar and change away from any place I wanted to go in one of the weirdest, most exciting, and historically rich cities in the world, and never needing to worry about getting stuck in traffic.

Yeah, Washington is pretty Wacky, but Washington is one of the most ‘historically rich’ cities in the world? My ass. Even in the “new world”, it doesn’t compare for age to boston, philly, or new york. There was hot shit going on there before the United States even existed. If we expand it to the western world, what about Rome? Paris? London? Berlin? Moscow? Athens? Constantinople? Not to mention, oh, the rest [ie, the majority] of the planet, like Jerusalem, Beijing, Cairo, Alexandria, Delhi, and Bombay? to cover but the tiniest slice. I only wish I knew more.

Where’s a non-euro-centric history text when I need one?

In truth it, [x]-centrism, is a natural condition for most of humanity. None of us can really see the big picture, and we naturally emphasize what we know best, what is most familiar to us, what is closest to us, etc. The entirety of the planet (let alone the solar system/galaxy/etc) is a little too big to take in.

But there are moments when it’s gets a little out of hand. Take, for instance, the quoted statement. =)

      Perspective is nice.

our of curiosity i’d like to ask you of you have any feelings about Abolitionist theory? and if you had to choose, structural or functional Marxism?

    🙂

I’m not sure what you’re talking about Abolishing. I would guess slavery, but that doesn’t seem in keeping with the rest of the question. =)

All I know about Marxism is the following: According to Marx, the workers, tired of their exploitation and oppression by the owners of property, will one day rise up to overthrow their masters and take the means of production to be jointly owned for the egalitarian benefit of all. I’m not sure how to separate that into functional & structural components. I also don’t see it as horribly realistic in the light of human nature. Revolt I could see, but egalitarian utopia just doesn’t happen, noble philosophies not withstanding.
