Up too early, go to church?

That’s what I get for sleeping on the office floor I guess. For once I appreciate daylight savings time in the spring.

I’m thinking of going to church for once (it’s a sunday morning, what else am I going to do? Research on my paper? Not likely =) Of course, I’m thinking of a unitarian universalist church (not too many religious groups have an enthusiastic welcome for their gay vegan atheist bretheren). Sadly for today, but happily in general, their services don’t start until 11am.

They do have a 9:45am discussion group, apparently this week’s topic is an international criminal court. Maybe I’ll go to that.

Next week (when I’ll be in Chicago for the CGMC show) is about the ethics of eating (that would have been very interesting, oh well). UUU (unattached unitarian universalists) is meeting on friday, when I’m on the train to chicago, and next sunday is also when Interweave, the church’s gblt{etc} group meets. Similarly for next month, all this fun stuff is happening when I’ll be out of town for Josh’s graduation =)

I guess that there are worse things than having a life =)

Pity about the 4 hour drive, and me with no car

I’ve never actually been. I mean I agree with the principles they espouse & all, but I’m kinda wary of the concept of church, regardless of their philosophical backing.

But I’m going to give it a chance. Never learn anything if you don’t try something new.

Btw, did you get my mail from the other day? I know you said in your journal you were having troubles with lj mail the day I sent it, just wanted to know if I oughta resend. =)

        I got your mail!

I’m wary of organized religions too. I’ve sampled a couple of the UU services in the suburbs but they seem anxious to want me to become a MEMBER and give them MONEY, or they want me to VOLUNTEER, etc.

Why can’t I just sit and watch and listen for a while 😉

The idea that spirituality occurs within the confines of a particular building for one hour per week is kinda weird to me.

And the genre of the weekly service feels so confining — the opening song sung by a choir with a gay music director, the announcements, the sermon, more songs, etc, all wrapped up in a nice little package.

I don’t mean to demean it for people who enjoy it … I’d like to go, but not all by myself. Sometime soon I’ll sample the DC UUs with Lion Cub.

It was interesting. Apparently, this is the day of their annual youth-run service. I’m going to try it out at least a few more times before I try to make any long term affiliational decisions =)

It was different from the catholic ceremonies I grew up with: Interesting, I suppose. But the same milling around over doughnuts & coffee afterwards, where everyone is wearing a big smile. I think it’s that it all feels a little fake to me. Maybe it’s just because I haven’t had the koolaid yet, as it were, maybe it’s because I wanted to take the role of the unseen observer to start off with, but I didn’t feel comfortable. And this guy I met through FrontRunners, who tried to introduce me to everyone and anyone he knew was trying to help, but really didn’t.

My deep and abiding resentment of oversized corporations with anticompetetive business practices means that I loathe Starbucks. Gimme a funky one-of-a-kind local coffee shop anyday. With soymilk, please.

Plus, I don’t drink coffee, nor do I consume nonchocolate sources of caffeine, and even that, not often =)
