There’s a hostel available for about $28/night in vancouver around the time of the triathlon near. Should I go with that, or attempt to mooch off of nice lj people? I’d usually go with the latter, because I would always rather spend quality time with people I like (or think I’ll like) rather than twiddle my thumbs in a hotel room or equivalent. The money isn’t a big deal. I’ll pay about as much to rent a bike while out there.
which hostel are we referring to?
The cambie, seymour or gastown. Seymour looks marginally closer to the triathlon and ubc and had a higher rating according to google.
Yes, for sleeping, the Seymour is better. But they both have loud bars downstairs and sometimes it’s tough to get a good rest. If I remember right, the “breakfast” in their price consists of your choice from a large stack of pastries on the front desk, and a coffee or tea. All rooms except one are 2-bed bunks.
Also even closer to the action is the HI hostel on Burnaby St. in the West End. I seem to remember that their included “breakfast” was much more thorough. Rooms have more beds though.
The HI hostel looks a little closer to the race, but that’s several miles from ubc. Sounds like the university is kinda far from the interesting parts of town, with no train service. Would you say that’s accurate?
I’ll investigate further. =)
UBC is well connected by buses, including electric trolleys. All buses have bike racks. The Skytrain only goes to the eastern concrete suburbs, malls, not that much of it is interesting (although there are some scenic parks). The Kitsilano neighbourhood is in between downtown and UBC but other than that the school is relatively isolated.
If you stay downtown (HI or Cambie), you will be within one bus of pretty much everywhere you want to go.
Is part of the event at UBC? Or is there something you’re planning to do at UBC while here?
Planning to talk to people about a potential PhD. =)
Neat. Well don’t bother planning your location around UBC.
I can’t offer Vancouver accommodations (at least not this time around) but I’d be happy to hang out when you’re in town.
