Exercise journal, health thoughts, and bike maintenance

4 mile run last thursday night
2.5 mile swim practice on saturday morning
6 mile run sunday evening
4 mile run wed morning

Bike as transportation probably covered 20 miles in the same time span.

I am serious about the full length (not iron man) triathlon in SF in november.

I am also serious about getting back to a more ideal weight for me and improving my general cardiovascular condition, though that will require some dietary changes as well. Most notably: less cheese. Just about all cheese is a heaping helping of saturated fat. Which is both a bunch of calories and a precursor for LDLs. I just got my blood work back. They want LDLs to be 160 or below. Mine were at 160. Das not good. I hear flax seed may help too.

In addition they found a slight excess of liver enzymes, which he wants to test again after I haven’t been drinking for a few days (I don’t think I’d been drinking for a few days before he took it the first time. My appointment was on friday 6/6, I don’t recall having a drink at all that week. Maybe _something_ on the tuesday night dinner 6/3, but not after. I’ve really slowed down on my ethanol consumption with the teetotaler roommate, who nonetheless buys alcohol and keeps it in the fridge in case guests want it. Not that it was alot before, but still. Kind of surprising to hear that.

My bike needs help. My chain is seriously messed up. Rusty and sticky in spots, causing the chain to jump every other rotation of the pedals or so. This seems to require more than the basic care, though it could likely have been forestalled or at the very least delayed by the basic care. Should I just take it into the mechanic or is there some clever thing I can do at home that wouldn’t be substantially more expensive and wouldn’t take up a bike mechanic’s precious time (wouldn’t force me to wait), on my own?

  1. Have you tried taking the chain off the bike and cleaning it thoroughly? If it’s too rusty it might also be too loose, which would necessitate a replacement (I’m coming up on replacement time for my mtn bike’s chain).

  2. I had to give up drinking with my liver enzymes…. granted there is a small tumor growing, but my blood counts for my ALT’s & AST’s were OFF THE CHARTS… My doctor couldn’t believe I was still standing… two weeks without a single drink and my counts where nearly perfect.

Every February 1st I have a drink in honor of my anniversary of not drinking anymore…. almost two years now.

    Chocolate is a great substitute.

  3. Wow, I’m surprised your LDL is high given you’ve been veganish for so long. Do you eat eggs?

I’ve only had my cholesterol tested once in 2006, back when I was a strict vegan – HDL was 72 and LDL was 62. I’ve been eating a fair bit of cheese and eggs in the past year so I have no clue what it is now.

Hm, though I guess genetics contributes as well.

  4. Don’t forget that a lot of medications can affect your liver enzyme levels as they are processed. Tylenol in particular comes to mind, and should be avoided in advance of your next blood draw.

Just a (hopefully helpful) thought. I’ve also had some luck with controlling lipid levels, but I’m not sure how open you are to switching to the Atkins diet plan. =)
