This American Life and the Savage Lovecast are entertaining, but if I’m going to fuel my running habit with podcasts, I need something more than 1.5-2 hours / week.
I’ve tried the weekly geek, which wasn’t bad. Many have recommended feast of fools, but that’s kinda enh. If I could get the TED talks on my cowon, that’d be pretty awesome. Independent radio oklahoma did introduce me to some neat songs and bands that I doubt I would have found otherwise, but the signal to noise ratio kinda blows.
Something science and/or tech oriented seems like a decent addition. A straight up news podcast might be good too.
Why aren’t you listening to NPR’s Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me? What is wrong with you? It is a weekly news quiz show that will fucking crack you up. It is good to listen to while run but dangerous while drinking since it is guaranteed to bring fluid through your nose. Be ever wary of the dangerous humor.
For that matter, let me point you to http://www.npr.org/podcast. We’ve got a listing of 618 public radio podcasts. That should be enough to keep you busy.
I second Wait Wait…, and we also have a Technology podcast.
Radio Lab is another excellent production from NPR, but if you regularly listen to This American Life you were probably already tipped off to it.
RadioLab from NPR.
It’s a little bit This American Life and a little bit Science Friday. I highly suggest it.
NPR’s “Fresh Air” is a must. Plus it airs every day so there’s more to chose from.
I’ve been loving Studio 360, another NPR one. Lots of interesting stories about science, culture, and the arts (in fact, I think that is how they bill it). I always find myself writing down the books and music they talk about to seek out myself.
I’m a little ashamed to admit I also like the Marketplace podcasts. I started with Marketplace Money, which is a weekly broadcast focusing more on personal finance and economics for the consumer. Now I’ve graduated to the hard stuff– the daily half-hour Marketplace show, which is a bit more businessy but still in an interesting and accessible way. Both have made me understand a lot better the connections between government and business and my own finances.
NPR’s Cartalk and Driveway Moments are good.
I just started listening to “The Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe” (see http://www.theness.com/) – the most recent one talked about Time-share vacation scams. I think I’ll be listening to next week’s.
Radio Lab is dreadful! Marketplace, Marketplace Money, Wait Wait, On the Media, This American Life, and Tech Nation are my faves.
I’m a bit behind in reading blogs, so everyone here mentioned my favorites already. I second (or third or fourth) Wait Wait. I also like Science Friday (http://www.sciencefriday.com/) and their podcasts are broken down by topic so you can pick and choose what interests you.
