random consumer-y bits

Pumpkin spice red tea is tasty, also, sadly, seasonal.

I wonder if there’s anywhere around here I can get pumpkin (note: not pumpkin pie) ice cream…

I have decided to get all DIY on my bike. I’m going to replace the handlebars and seat. I’ve had good luck with split seats in the past.

My current (drop down) handlebars are covered with disintegrating rubber foam crap. I could just replace the coverings (how do you get that crap off? My current inclination is to use something sharp to cut them off, then maybe burn them ritually, but if they’re adhered to the bars, that plan won’t work nearly so easily.)

I’m wondering if the bullhorns are a good idea. My intuition tells me that they won’t let me push as much power as the drop downs, but they do seem like they’d be more comfortable. Any thoughts?

I want to add a rear rack to spare my back and possibly enable grocery and camping trips.

Of course there are a few other changes I’d like to make. It has decent speed now, but I would like higher gears. Since I’m in chicago, lower gears really aren’t necessary. For the first time I’m seeing the appeal of a fixed gear.

  1. Red tea: neither red nor tea. Discuss.
The foam crap usually can be cut and peeled off, but you may want the replacement coverings put on by a professional, as it’s hard to do right.

  2. If the grips are stuck on with an adhesive, ammonium (or Windex, etc.) will do wonders.

If they are tightly friction fit, wedge them open and pour a few tablespoons of rubbing alcohol inside. I found this gem on the Internet after spending ten minutes with a pliers yanking as hard as I could (…to no avail). It worked as advertised.

  3. I was going to suggest Bobtail, but someone beat me to it. There is also a location at Armitage between Clark & Lincoln. I haven’t tried their pumpkin ice cream yet, but I saw it on their sign and I intend to.

  4. I don’t know many local ice cream places downtown (aside from maybe Bobtail – are they the ones in Grant Park?), but I have had tasty pumpkin ice cream from both Baskin Robbins and Cold Stone Creamery. (You can get the pumpkin ice cream without any mix-ins from Cold Stone, although I also recommend their Pumpkin Pie in the Sky mix – pumpkin ice cream with graham cracker pie crust pieces, caramel, and whipped topping. I look forward to it every year.)
