I’m listening to my Sennheiser PXC-250’s right now, and I’ll never travel without them. I think this is one item where you get what you pay for — I had a pair of cheaper Panasonics that just didn’t do cancel nearly as much background noise as the Sennheisers. I’d recommend them.
I highly recommend getting sound isolation headphones instead of noise cancelling. They’re generally less bulky, and they don’t require batteries. I really adore my E3cs, and I previously had the E2cs, which were very good as well.
i have the sony ones. they’re inexpensive and the sound quality is no different from the bose ones. the only thing i don’t like about them, and any over-the-ear type of headset, is that they make my ears warm. but i’m exothermic.
I hearts me my Bose QC2s. They were a gift though, so I don’t have to factor in how much they cost. They are big.. but i find the case works perfectly for storing my ipod.
David Pogue just did a review for a bunch of them on the NYT.

sennhauser–they were good on the NYC subway system, and I’m using them now for phonemic transcription work.

I like my Bose headphones in terms of sound quality and comfort but they are massive and it’s frequently a slight nuissance.

The QC3s I got for my girlfriend were mighty awesome! But they cost a good $340 or so.
