So, there’s this article about a Muslim woman from the US who encountered difficulties while wearing a full covering swim suit. What fascinates me is the reaction of people to the whole thing. My older sister is pale as a ghost, and sun burns more readily than anyone I know. She has repeatedly expressed interest in these swim suits. Not that it makes a difference, but my sister isn’t Muslim. Would people have reacted any differently to her wearing such a swim suit?

(ps, thanks,
That article is really sad. The author should never have been subjected to such treatment.
On the other hand, at least in terms of your older sister’s concerns, it is worth noting that Ms. Omar said she didn’t have problems wearing that swim suit in the United States.
I at least have some hope for the future when I read things like this: “In fact, the churchgoing community I lived in as a child welcomed me, and after my experience in the UK I want to go back to the local priest and kiss him on the forehead for not only preaching about respect but putting it into practice.”
Wow! That poor woman! I can just imagine how traumatic that would be, plus it so happens that they singled out a particularly progressive, proactive, and accomplished woman without giving her any say whatsoever. It sounds like even if she’d gotten a word in edge-wise, they would’ve painted her as an even crazier person.
Grrr… given my darker shading, it _almost_ makes me want to wear a burka. I’m obviously not Islamic, but I’d like to make a stand to break down the discrimination against those who choose to follow their faiths.
Good gods. Makes we want to throttle the people at that pool and the people at that paper. The sheer ignorance and bigotry (and sexism) is mind-blowing.
Sheesh
Given that she’s worn such an outfit in Hawaii & in Maryland, & didn’t catch any flak at all, as far as I can recall, I think this must be something we just haven’t seen yet. Jerks come in all shapes & sizes, & this lady happened to encounter some in the UK.
