i was raised in south dakota and worked as a teen in chago a bit, so i think i am VERY midwestern. but my work is such that conflict (inner and otherwise) is grist for my creativity and therefore to be explored openly and often with exhibitionistic enthusiasm 🙂
I think there’s a strong element of rural v city to it. Rural areas, you don’t see people as much of the time, and it’s generally the same people. Cities you are constantly deluged in an ever-changing sea of faces.

Oh, I went coastal myself, and partly acculturated, but my roots remain. And I’m back where I grew up (and longing for the left coast).
That’s a southern trait as well. Passive-aggression is an art form where I grew up.
