Conference commutes

Ewww, it’s over 40 minutes (!?!) to get to station square of a morning from the CMU area by public transportation. It’s 5 miles away. Here in chicago, on the train, I travel about 10 miles with a transfer, in under an hour. *Le Sigh* Rental car is cheaper than hotel. I wonder if I could get a bike and commute via the jail trail. Or maybe just bring my skates. Low tech sustainability in action. =)

      1. there used to be a place downtown, near the jail, but i’m pretty sure it’s out of business.

unfortunately, other than there, i don’t know where you’d go to rent a bike. maybe a bike shop in shadyside or squirrel hill?

maybe rei in south side? they’d probably know where you could rent one, anyway.

      2. Hm. You could try the bike rental place on the jail trail, but I don’t know if they open before Memorial Day.

You might, however, be able to talk one of your nice local pals the Valentine-Lanzas into lending you one of their bikes for the duration of your stay, if you ask real pretty.

        1. Woo! I’d really only want it for Sunday evening through Wednesday afternoon.

For most Carnival time activities, I’d be hanging out with friends who presumably walked or could give me a ride. =)

          1. OK!

I can’t recall if we have a U-lock or not; I’ll have to check. Both bikes have overwintered in the basement but shouldn’t need more attention than having the tires pumped up…both got a tune-up before being put away.

  1. Don’t get used to that sub-hour transit time on the trains here in Chicago. But you know that already…

Why would you be going to Station Square? There’s nothing but restaurants, bars and a Sheraton there, right? Perhaps you need to start your day with a little Buca di Beppo?

    1. Oh, I’m well aware, hence my imminent move to parts southerly, aka lincoln park (apparently, your zip code?)

Heh, Station square because of the conference I’ll be attending. =)

  2. I just booked a business trip to Pittsburgh and was a bit surprised at how pricey it is. In the past year, I’ve stayed in downtown San Diego and downtown San Jose for much less than I’ll be paying on this trip. And the car is no bargain either. Ok, my company is paying, but still, when did Pittsburgh become such a spendy destination?

    1. Pittsburgh is pricey and I don’t really know why. Whenever I stayed there I got to use ridiculously cheap corporate rates (a benefit of working for one of the biggest companies in town) but I’ve seen the regular prices and they’re not pretty. Also, if you’re staying downtown it’s really dead at night, and there aren’t a lot of good options for dinner.
