3 days in a midtown manhattan hotel costs more than 1 month in a chicago apartment. Yikes. That’s going to hurt later.
[EDIT: Okay, I found a guest house for a much more reasonable $50/night. It’s a bit out of the way, but I figure $100/day is more than sufficient for all my cab fare needs. =)]
Try priceline! I get a hotel near the UN through them, usually last minute, for $80 a night.
DAMN! Just curious… what’s the average cost of a studio or one bedroom in Chicago? I figure you might have an idea. 🙂
I haven’t been checking out 1Br’s, so I’m not really sure, but off the top of my head, I’d say anywhere from 500 (for a run down slum, in an iffy part of town) to 7-8 hundred for modest, but not actually bad, housing to over a thousand for fancy shmancy digs.
chicago.craigslist.org would be a better reference.
One of the reasons I’m considering Chicago is the cost of rent. Right now I pay $1,150 for a shoebox (errr studio). The idea of paying under $1,000 for a decent one bedroom rocks my world. Yeah, I could check out craigs list, but I thought I’d just be lazy and ask you. 🙂
When will you be in town? I live in Staten Island which is a commute, but we have a futon and it’s free.
I get in at nearly 11pm on the 2nd and leave on the morning of the 5th. How much of a commute are we talking here? =)
aww, we’ll be gone that whole time! boo! the commute depends on where you want to go…an hour from midtown, 45 mins from downtown, 2 hours from where I work (122nd&Broadway). Boo! I can’t believe you’re visiting and I won’t see you!
I’ve always done well at the Big Apple Hostel. Their rates are slowly inching up, but for they’re location, it’s unbelievable. It’s also a walk up (you can use the elevator when you check in & out), but I never had a problem with that. They’re on 47th between 6th & 7th.
Yeah, the problem there was availability. I did find them via hostelworld.com.
re: guest house: where, and is it close to the subway?
northeast of central park, but still on manhattan. Supposedly, right next door to a subway stop.
