Electronics replacement time

I was going to take a new picture of myself for this thing, ‘cuz I’m severely procrastinating. Well, it turns out my old camera is nowhere to be found. But that’s not such a terrible thing because it really is an old camera. We’re talking a christmas gift in the late 90’s and it was not cutting edge then. So, I want to replace it with some decent. Not an ooh-ahh camera, an affordable camera, that will last for a few years. Suggestions?

Also, my cell phone is limping along. Its problem is that it no longer fits the charger without a carefully adjusted folded up bit of paper. My contract with verizon is nearly up, and they’ve been offering incentives to sign back up with them. I’m debating the merits of changing to someone that’ll give me a free phone or going with a better Verizon deal + a new phone that sucks less for text messaging. That’d probably be one with some minikeyboard deal. Once I’ve hit that point, is it a small jump to get web-browsing and shit? Input most gratefully received.

Finally, I think I want to replace my crappy monitor with a flat panel.

Now all I need is a robotic masseur & I’m set.

  1. Why does everyone on my friends list at some point ask for camera recommendations???! Ugh, it makes me want to pull out my hair.

I have STRONG opinions on this. Nikkon is popular, if you like them, but I say CANON!!! Gurl, I loves me some Canon.

Tell me your price range and I’ll look up a suggestion. Then you can buy something totally different and lie to me about it.

      1. Kodak Easyshare

You will want to drop another $30 – $50 for a decent memorycard, but I have bought thousands of dollars of merch through this site and they have an about perfect record with me (1 issue during several years, and they stepped up to fix it ASAP). They also have several models all in that range of quality and price. Have at it. Flood the net with images of your scruffiness. Fight the gay stereotype that all gay men are well-groomed and take care of themselves. 1 Kiloword = 1 Picture.

It’s $168 with shipping, but really, a digital camera that’s too cheap will be a waste of money.

And do me a favor, never EVER use digital zoom. Thanks.

Don’t forget to always use the flash indoors also. Digital camera pics taken inside without the flash are a travesty.

        (Also at Buy.com for $175, free shipping – http://www.buy.com/prod/Canon_PowerShot_A520_4_0_Megapixel_Digital_Camera_w_4X_Zoom/q/loc/33409/90145192.html)

  2. My 2 cents

For the phone, check out PhoneScoop.com. I don’t know about the minikeyboards. I carried around one of those giant Treo 650-thingies for about three months. Being unable to fit in your pocket, the phone can have no social life. Dancing? Phone stays in the car. Out drinking with friends? You become That Guy with his ridiculous PDA-phone in the middle of the table ’cause he’s just that self-important. And the tiny keyboard was no good for my stubby thumbs anyway. But it was cool to be able to settle any debate on the spur of the moment with a quick Google-trip. (There are smaller keyboard-phones; check PhoneScoop.)

Now I use the sweet little Motorola E815. Pocket-friendly, I get reception in Siberia, and the amazing giant keys are SMS-tastic.

As for the camera, my 5-megapixel Sony Cybershot has been A+.

    Matt

  3. Recommendations

Phone: Love the Treo 650. Have no problem having it in my pocket, can take it anywhere including dancing. But if you want something smaller, the Razr is quite slick.

Camera: I recommend the Digital Elphs. Get one with a large LCD screen in the back. The cameras are small so you are more likely to take them places. If you want a really nice digital SLR, the Canon Rebels are cool. Great for doing real photography but not easy to take out to parties and such.

Monitor: The DELL flat panels are great flat panels for their price. the 20″ one (2001FP) is about $550 right now.. but often tech bargains will list Dell specials, sometimes including limited time price cuts in their flat panels.
