Asceticism is generally abstaining from food, sex, and other worldly pleasures or to a lesser degree, partaking in harsh or demanding physical regimens, such as self-flagelation, or frequent heavy exercise.
Generally it also carries a connotation of doing it for spiritual enlightenment, or other great insight.
Simply put “I’m going to quit drinking, and playing video games, and hanging out with friends, so I can concentrate on schoolwork.”

I try that, but end up not doing the schoolwork anyway, so it’s a lose-lose.
