Well, my laptop was boxed up in Houston with the monitor repaired and sent off to MN. That’s the good news. That’s the only good news.
When the package got to the store in Edina, it had been busted open and retaped with my laptop nowhere to be found. Thank you, DHL. So, the apple store says it’s going to take an additional week to get my laptop replaced, but that I can get a loaner in the meantime. ??? Why not just give me the fucking loaner?
Okay, leaving that aside, time for an assessment of loss. I don’t know when the last time I did a full backup was, but it was shortly before I left Chicago. Probably around the time of the great laptop dvd-drive replacement. I did fortunately back up my class related stuff right before sending out the laptop for repair. And my porn downloads went to my backup drive after the aforementioned dvd drive replacement. Whoopee? So the main thing I’ll be missing are a month and a half of adium chat logs. That is a source of sadness, but not an insurmountable one. That and the time to configure my system the way I want it. Install software, download patches, etc, etc. Next time they send some of my hardware off for repair, they should give me the hard drive and send the rest.
I lose nowhere near as
Or maybe you just wanted to post that you were frustrated and annoyed to appear intellectually and socially superior to someone that expressed that they felt rage.
BAM
Did it really sound that way to you? I intended it more as an atheist’s “there but for the grace of god go I.”
I have rage in me, and it’s come out at much less provocation than hundreds of dollars of property damage with an additional $300+ ticket item being stolen. I do not like it when it comes out to play, but I’m not the sort to claim that it doesn’t. I’ve made my share of idiot pronouncements in my time, and even though I’m not uniformly grateful for people calling me on my shit, I try to be.
If there’s an armchair psychoanalysis that fits, it’s probably that I’m trying to deal with my rage in another person, and maybe not in a healthy way.
Your post didn’t sound that way to me, at least, not offensively so until I read it in the context of Aaron’s post about his car + iPod. He’s not on my friendlist even though we have a broad degree of social overlap, or I’d have replied to your comment in his LJ instead of in yours. I didn’t want to troll in his LJ.
After I re-read your post it felt smug and superior and taking someone else’s bad situation to give yourself an opportunity to shine by demonstrating how not to display such vulgar rage. I’ve perceived you acting this way in the past, but… eh, it’s rarely within me to confront people about their behavior choices. I guess this was one of those moments.
So, some thief is now enjoying your porn??? That sucks.
I could care less whether a thief enjoys my porn. I just care whether or not I can enjoy it. More importantly, I miss my chat and sent mail logs, the main data loss in this circumstance.
Ouch.
My poor lappy also is in need of repair, though she’s still limping along (with only half her RAM; the Beloved has deduced that some connections may need resoldered). I’m hoping I can find someone local and reputable to take care of what sounds like a relatively simple fix — I’m not keen on putting my computer in the hands of anyone else, but certainly not via shipping.
So, anyway, I sympathize, especially being at eventual risk of such myself.
Backups
Sorry to hear about your loss.
Recently I realized how much data was on my personal computer and decided to start doing regular backups. I recommend getting an external firewire drive (as big or bigger than your current hard drive) and using a free OS X tool called Carbon Copy Cloner. It does rsync backups, so the first time it takes awhile but subsequent times it only backs up what changed. Handy!
God I hope I’m commenting on the right entry this time.
Re: Backups
received and helpful, thanks. I’ve been thinking about such things, but waaaay too lazy to actually write one myself. =)
Well, that sucks!
ugh
DHL blows goats. They lost a PRICELESS IRREPLACEABLE painting of mine. They claimed they can give me only $150 in replacement. It’ll cost me 6k to get anything comparable…
Re: ugh
Yeah, a friend of mine from Bosnia was applying for a Canadian Visa. She shipped her payment, passport, and, of course, US Visa to Vienna via DHL. It never reached Vienna. And now she’s on the red list because someone else tried to get in under her id.
Sorry to hear that: that’s really shitty. DHL have to pay for the replacement right? I mean, you’re not going to be out of pocket, are you?
It looks like apple will “do the right thing” on this one. Well, mostly the right thing.
I saw a commercial on TV today praising DHL’s customer service and reliability… HA!
