When someone tells me “thank you” my usual response is “thank you“. It’s like I think I ought to be grateful for other people’s gratitude. The prototypical response is “you’re welcome.” Something for me to work on.

i go with “no problem”, as if to say…. courtesy is to expected….or something…
…. i like pie…
I don’t have a problem with your response. In fact, “You’re welcome” sounds aloof coming from certain people.
Depends on the situation. If you’ve done someone a favor, saying “no problem” or “you’re welcome” is appropriate, depending on the situation. I wouldn’t ever say “thank you” back if I was the one doing the favor. I tend to use “no problem” with less formal situations and relationships. That’s basically my default.
However, when it’s a mutually beneficial situation, saying “thank you” back is perfectly fine. Sometimes I think it helps to clarify with “thank you for….” when thanking someone back.
At least it makes sense to me!
WHenever I fly someplace, and an airport employee says “Have a nice flight” I shoot back with “you too!”
Then I realize that the airport employee is probably not intending to fly anywhere on that particular day.
what irritates me is the obligation to say “thank you” when someone says “bless you” after you sneeze.
