Could have been any number of things passed by ‘skeeters but I figured the more obvious the better. Besides “sleeping sickness” appears in northern climes during Friday workdays.

Ah, you are correct. I should have checked other sources. OED says both are acceptable as well. *hangs head in shame*
In other news, apparently, mosquitoey is a word, meaning “infested with mosquitoes”.
