Potentially bailing on Bikeathon

Bleh.

I may have to bail on the bikeathon. It’s expensive to get out there, and the minimum donation to raise would cost me more than the plane ticket at present (I’m extraordinarily bad at fundraising). Plus it’s days off work that are rare and precious to me. <ponder, ponder, ponder>

  1. If it comes to not riding at all, we can claim some of the donations I raised on your sheet. I bet you can raise the $350 in a couple hours, though, just by asking family and co-workers. You buy tagalongs, right? whoever owns that girlscout *owes* you.

    1. I have $5 from asking coworkers, and $0 from asking family. The major reason for this is not that I have alienated these fine people, nor that I haven’t asked. I have asked, I haven’t alienated, I just feel terribly wrong doing it.

I am skeptical of the moral or ethical framework for this whole thing, and events like it. Last year, as part of my participation in chicago smelts, I did their annual ‘splash your heart out’ fundraiser. It had a $35 minimum donation that I paid myself, because every time I ask people for money for something like this, I feel like a con artist.

  2. Also: I have a pretty nice extra bike (Trek 850, slick tires, brand new chain and gear set, tuned up two weeks ago) that you can use, so you don’t have to worry about getting your bike here.
