FFXI update

I’m not yet ready to follow in the footsteps of and , though I would be anything but surprised if I canceled my ffxi membership before my summer internship. We shall see.

But thanks to not going on a real world vacation, I stayed home and took a virtual one. With the following results (not all new)

thf 34, mnk 20, whm 11, war 7, blm 6, rng 5, drk 5, brd 4
Cooking 20, Smithing 11, Woodworking 9, Goldsmithing 6, Clothcraft 6, leathercraft 3, Bonecraft 2, fishing 1,
windurst rank 3
and an upgraded mog safe, as well as various minor quests.

Short term I’d like to get thf a bit of an exp buffer, so that de-leveling isn’t a major fear. I’d also like to work on the dagger skill so that I’ll have viper bite for SATA’ing fun.
My longer term goals, in order, are to get blm to at least 17 for warp, rng to 22 as thf sub, and thf to 45 for treasure hunter II

Brd is there purely for the fun factor, ‘cuz it seems like a cool job. Drk is another potential thf subjob, for the solo’ing experience, and possibly for parties, as a high melee/sata damage arrangement. No, I’m not doing Nin. Or Sam. I may go to the bother of getting smn, but it is quite a bother to go to. Drg can bite me. Pld is second to smn in likeliness, but ahead of sam, nin, and drg.

  1. um… isn’t Viper bite the very first dagger WS? and you’re a level 34 THF? WTF weapon have you been using?
    Thf’s use daggers.
There’s no ‘and’ anywhere in that it’s just .

Only 30 more levels to go to match my cooking skill.

    1. Nope, Viper Bite is like dagger 100. Wasp Sting is the dagger 10 ws.

I’ve been using sword, because SATA multiplies fastblade damage, unlike the dagger weaponskills before Viper Bite. =)

Am I crazy or did you cancel your account? =) Doesn’t that make your cooking skill now 0? 😉

  2. In the long term virtually every thf has nin as a support job because of the stat bonuses and utusemi. In fact, you’d probably be looked down upon by other players if you didn’t have nin as a support job. But, the won’t become an issue for some time. Most people haven’t figured out which support jobs are best until the 50s anyway.

Bard is a lot of fun. I wish I had pursued it more. I just didn’t feel like doing the af for another job and leveling through the Crawler’s Nest again.

    1. THF/NIN

That’s definitely the attitude on our server as well, but I don’t get it. The loss of Accuracy Bonus, +AGI/Sharpshot, and Widescan seems like such a huge sacrifice of TP gain, overall damage, and smooth pulls (respectively) in exchange for Utsu “I don’t trust my team one bit” Semi. Maybe it’s different after 60 with the Greed+Lust combo.

      1. Re: THF/NIN

IIRC You lose Ranged Accuracy Bonus, not Accuracy Bonus, and NIN is #3 or #4 on both AGI and DEX, 2nd best overall on those two after RNG.

You get dual wield for additional TP gain, which is important because most thief damage comes from renkei.

Utsusemi isn’t for not trusting your team, it’s so that you can deal more damage without falling down. Taking the couple of hits every so often also makes life easier on your healers.

After 60 life is irrelevant for thieves if you’re trying to join pickup groups.

I dunno, THF/NIN was always the preferred choice back when I played for good reason.

        1. Re: THF/NIN

RNG is C-DEX/A-AGI and NIN is B-DEX/B-AGI, but RNG’s Accuracy Bonus applies to all physical attacks and, having tried both, that trait is far better for consistent hits than the 1 or 2 points of DEX gained with /NIN. Dual Wield does nothing for TP gain before Lv50, and the big TP jumps from gun hits (esp. with the cape that enhances Rapid Shot) mean lots of weapon skills.
THF/NIN isn’t a bad combo by any means, but I don’t find its advantages compelling enough to justify the popular “/NIN or nothing” attitude, compared to /RNG. I swear some of these people take the lecturing tone of telling PLDs to sub WAR.

          1. Re: THF/NIN

How do gun hits get you TP faster than melee? Also, one of the other benefits of THF/NIN was the big DEX boost of the off-hand dagger.

I wouldn’t consider THF/RNG to be awful, but nowhere in the same league as THF/NIN.

Did something change with PLDs? Again, back when I played, there was a good reason PLD/WAR was the only viable combination for PLDs. No other combo could hold aggro as well.

            1. Re: THF/NIN

Marksmanship hits give you 11-12 TP compared to 5-6 with a dagger/sword and when Rapid Shot kicks in it hardly disrupts your melee rhythm at all, not to mention the huge damage the shots are causing. The +stat weapons and reduced Dual Wield delay after Lv60 definitely add merit to /NIN–I’m troubled most by the scolding that folks get when they consider ANY other THF sub at any point, even before Lv20 when /NIN adds precisely jack and squat.

By PLD/WAR lecture, I just meant that players have come to talk about /NIN as this one-and-only option as indispensible as a PLD’s /WAR sub. Bottom line is games like this produce some strange herd psychology. 🙂

    2. See, my original thinking was that I heard that people prefer drk/thf to thf/nin at high levels, because thf/nin does squat for damage, with or without SATA, because the enemy defense is so high. So, why not thf/drk where you get two Attack Up traits, a significant strength boost, and pretty good dex? Plus, if drk/thf does a good sata with soul eater and last resort, why can’t a thf/drk?

To my mind, thf/rng would be purely for better pulling. Okay, maybe not purely, maybe better ranged happiness as well (though not ranged weaponskills, save the TP for the SATA).

  3. I kinda feel bad about quitting FFXI, except that past 55 the game is just excruciating and not at all fun for me.

Oh, wait. I guess I don’t feel so bad. 😉

I’m sad I won’t get my thief to 75 though.

    1. Yeah bitch, you’re missing out. I’m a few hours of leveling away from equipping my final Warlock’s piece, n00b. 🙂
I take it Junior and his insect wing have evaporated into ether, forcing me to mine for 600k before continuing THF and RNG?!

      1. Junior is in stasis, at least for the next 86 days. Congrats on your warlock gear 🙂 — I’m sorry I won’t be there to see it.

I’m just soooooooooooooooooooooooo tired of waiting hours and hours for groups and I don’t have the initiative or drive to make groups from random peoples.

        1. The game does seem stacked against the offense fighters. Part of it is that SAM, WAR, DRK, DRG, and MNK are all competing for one party slot, and a disproportionate number of North American 13-year-olds pick those jobs.
So yes, I feel your pain, but…

Do I get your shite or not?! 😀

                1. It has yet to reach the age of a fine wine or cheese.
The sooner I achieve my Emperor Hairpin-related goals in Vana’diel, the sooner I can join you. Hoozah!

  4. What’s stasis?

18/9 WAR/MNK and I’m stuck. I enjoyed doing all the qwests/missions I could, and combat was fun at first. But after too many wasted nights de-leveling, I’m not sure I want to stick around long enough to ride a Chocobo. I guess I got tired of partying with teenage boys.

    1. Re: What’s stasis?

Heh. Getting to Jeuno for the chocobo bit wasn’t hard for me, but I had acting as my body guard for that part. If the game is no longer fun for you, I encourage you to skip it, and do something more meaningful. Like maximizing your spitting distance. =)
