This friday, I’ll be going to Bolt Underground and taking advantange of the free coat check for the shirtless, and BU’s smokefree nature. =) It’ll be something to do.
Next friday, I’ll be hitting the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus Concert. Woo. =)
Getting a word in edgewise

Fagtastic.
How we will ever be united as a community when we perpetuate this discriminatory treatment of the shirted?
[Possibly creepy intro: I’ve been following your journal since a work-avoidance afternoon of lj-friends-friends browsing when I noted that you are a Minneapolis resident who knows, at least ljwise, my friends Esther () and Marybeth ( ). I had lunch with the two of them the other week in Atlanta, in fact. at this year’s USENIX LISA conference. Esther I’ve know for years (I once stopped to see her at the PSC on a cross-country trip and she took me to an astonishing former-church brewpub for lunch); Marybeth is a more recent USENIX acquaintance whom I enjoy.
Oh, and I continue to follow your journal because you write about stuff you’re studying and stuff you’re thinking about. After all, it’s a public forum and I am the public.]
Just to set your expectations here: Friday nights at the Bolt Underground haven’t taken off much at this point (which is probably why they have these various promotions). Saturdays, yes, and attendance does seem to be growing, and it’s always possible that this Friday in particular will be the night of a thousand joys (yeah, right), but there’s a chance it might seem a bit sparse.
It’s not that I, myself, can be found at the Bolt Underground (it’s a little too much hide-from-the-Nazis-in-Amsterdam for me, besides the fact that it’s a dance bar) but I’ve been hanging out at the Eagle a lot lately, ever since I decided that it’s a real pub rather than the leather bar it claims to be. It’s all about perception.
Anyway, since the Bolt Underground opened, the Eagle/Bolt/Bolt Underground complex charges a $5 cover starting at 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights. So if you’re choosing between arriving at 10:55 and 11:05 you might want to go for the former.
Just trying to be helpful, as I note the rare occasion when my own Friday night hangout gets mentioned (sortof) on a livejournal.
Yeah, I noticed the friending a ways back, I was vaguely curious whether you’d found me by friend-of-friend networking or geography, guess that question is now answered. =)
I’ve heard sunday at BU (apparently 80’s night or some such) is D E A D, as in my friend that went there was the only one there. It’s good to come forewarned. Now the question is whether I should come at all. I think I will, and I’ll shoot for 10:55, waiting until at least midnight or so, to see just how comatose it really is. =)
I’d probably be fine hanging out in the eagle, but for the nicotine clouds. Perhaps in march… =)
It’s pretty certain that I’ll be at the Eagle this Friday (it’s a hard habit to break, I’m finding) and I will probably come down to introduce myself (to find out what your connection actually is to Moose, if nothing else), if that’s doesn’t seem too odd. This is assuming your lj-icon actually identifies you.
The nicotine at the Eagle is in fact quite horrendous, and when you get home you’ve got to treat your clothing as you would treat sweat-drenched workout clothing lest it contaminate everything else in the laundry.
Sunday at BU may be dead, but Sunday beer bust time at the Eagle and Bolt (upstairs, with the clips from musicals on the video screens) can get extremely crowded. But yeah, the nicotine thing is difficult, and some find the showtunes themselves to be even more aversive than the smoke.
