“controversial” ad

Here’s the ad that NBC and CBS deem “too controversial” to air.

I had to go through it three times before I spotted the initial “gay male couple” if that’s what they’re supposed to be. Two guys walk up, and are denied entrance. They don’t even seem to notice one another. They have nothing to signify homosexuality about them. Later in the ad, as it flashes through various pictures of people, it fades in and out on a potentially lesbian couple, or they could be sisters, hard to tell really. And yet, this is too controversial for the network that airs Will & Grace.

Riiiight. Crackwhores.

  1. That’s dumb.

They mention the Constitutional Amendment against Gay Marriage as a reason why it’s too controversial. The fuck?! It almost makes me wonder if it’s a scam– any publicity is good publicity? Maybe the networks are trying to tap into the red states’ population? I don’t know, it seems to me that commercial says more against Catholicism than anything else. Maybe they don’t want to be the next Martin Luther.

I was raised in the UCC, by the way, and I’ve always felt they were that inclusive.

    1. Exactly my impression too. Anything with crosses and Jesus is automatically a little sensational, but the CBS spokesman’s reference to the marriage amendment is like… huh?

  2. Umm. The guys are holding hands.

It’s quick, but clearly there. You should look again.

And it’s stupid, how some companies are just knee-jerk reaction machines.

      1. I understand Middle Eastern men are even more huggy and kissy than the French and Italians. That’s probably reason enough for Team Jesus to justify bombing them.

  3. you can see the guys holding hands for a split second. and there appears to be two women standing together later, with ones arm around the other. i wonder if its maybe the “church as unaccepting” message that they are objecting to? either way, it seems really silly.
