Hmm…
I enjoy Patrick Stewart and Uma Thurman (I’m guessing Yupa and Kushana respectively), but English voices were jarring enough in Mononoke.
I wonder what’s on the second disc?
The Disney affiliation makes me skeptical. The butchered “Warriors of the Wind” release made Miyazaki cry tears of something that’s not joy.
Disney has the rights to distribute everything from Studio Ghibli up to and including Spirited Away.
Fortunately, they’ve been releasing Japanese audio tracks with subtitles on the DVDs they’ve been releasing, so if the English dub isn’t for you, you don’t have to watch it.
I have a lot of choice words for Disney, and they don’t tend to be polite ones, but once they actually get around to releasing Miyazaki films on DVD in North America, they actually do a pretty good job.
Ah, the memories…. ~grin~ Still have the fansubs, though I’ve bought originals (usually US releases… but not always) as they’ve come out, too. Though I haven’t particularly kept up with current releases in anime, which is too bad in some ways. (Much better on the wallet, tho! ~g~)
We definitely were undergrads when Disney got the rights to distribute Studio Ghibli; the general feeling, after six months plus of nothing happening, was that Disney bought the rights so that no one would distribute them in the US. Looks like they finally got around to it… or else realized they need the money, maybe!
hrm. they’ve swapped out Totoro and replaced it with The Cat Returns. one would think that they’d want to get Whisper of the Heart out before that, but maybe they’re still having problems with one of the major plot points being the translation of a song from English to Japanese.
per the Disney Tokuma deal, Disney cannot alter any of the films or original music without Ghibli’s consent.

Wow, I think I was still an undergrad when I first heard disney was going to do a US release of nausicaa.
I’m pretty sure my first viewing of Nausicaa was in presby’s room in Doherty, my freshman year
If that was the year mithramuse and I roomed with presby, that was a fansub of a japanese laserdisc.
