But I expected better after fellowship. I admit that as a book, TTT was my least favorite of the series, but my favorite parts of it were rather liberally urinated on.

First, the bad parts: Serious characters were converted to comic relief. I’m thinking specifically of Gimli and the ents. The ents were completely charicaturized as not terribly smart or aware of what was going on. Gimli was turned into a running short joke. The love stuff took up a much larger segment of the movie and didn’t do much for me (yes, I have seen het loves scenes that appealed to me, these did not). The whole death-rebirth motif with Aragorn was wholly unneccesary, but I guess they wanted a clear main hero, and having Gandalf go through such an interesting event neccesitated something similar for Aragorn (what of Frodo and Sam, hello?). This one was alot more fighting and warring, and whatever than the FotR, especially in terms of the stuff they added in. Treebeard thinking the hobbits were orcs was dumb. The fact that it was the hobbits who made the ents aware of the devestation wrought by Saruman was utterly nonsensical. “Hi, we’re tree herders, but we don’t bother paying attention to the trees”. Adding in the elven warriors for the battle of helm’s deep was bleh. Especially with the whole “can we trust the elves” buildup. And it was positively disgraceful what they did with Faramir. His temptation lasted an even shorter time than Galadriel’s in the books. Plus the whole “stand in front of the ringwraith with the ring, but move quickly and the wraith will leave you alone” annoyed me. The way they handled Gandalf’s return (first seen by ents, then attacked by legolas, et al) bothered me. I also wasn’t terribly impressed by Eowyn’s character. I wanted more metal in her personality. Also, when did Saruman get in the business of manufacturing bombs?

Now, on to the good.

I really liked the conflict that showed up between Elrond and Arwen regarding surrendering her immortality (though they didn’t phrase it that way. “oops”. and the way they resolved it left me a little disappointed). The visuals on alot of it were incredible. The ents were tres cool visually and the cleanup of Isengard was breathtaking. I do like the way they chunked up the series. I really, really want to see Shelob, but breaking at the same point as in the books would be a bad idea; for this medium, they picked a good ending point. What little character development they did made me happy. They also picked significantly different, more dangerous feels for all the characters. But I didn’t get the same sense of a coherent theme from the movie. The first one was very much about the bonds of common cause. This one, more scattered. (arguably true to the book).

Oops, slipping back into criticism. Well, it was a good movie. I may even see it again sometime. =)

[1

post-359","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
